New Birthing Pool Opens At Queen’s Hospital Burton

A new cutting-edge birthing pool room has been opened at Queen’s Hospital Burton, complete with fully accessible ergonomic pools, sympathetic décor and dimmable LED lighting to help give parents the most relaxing experience possible.

The pool suite, funded by Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity has been installed thanks to supporters of the charity.

To complete the project and further enhance the experience offered to parents and their birthing partners during labour, the charity also raised funds to supplement the new pool birth suite with comfortable seating, ambient lighting, and calming décor to further enhance the birthing experience.

Clare Pugh, Senior Midwife at Queens Hospital Burton, “This is a beautiful big space that allows midwives and birthing partners to have better access around the pool and it really enhances the treatment we can provide. Watching those babies being born under water is a magical experience and a joy to watch.”

The suite was made possible thanks to fundraising for Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity which raised £40,000 in response to a growing number of mums-to-be who are choosing water as their primary pain relief when giving birth.

We have had amazing fundraising support for the pool, and a local fundraiser completed a gruelling 15 hour triathlon to raise funds.

Father of three, Ed Clamp, took on the daunting task of the Triathlon to help support our appeal, after his twins were born in Burton.

The twins, Benjamin and Zachary, arrived in the world a little earlier than expected but it was baby Zachary who was cause for concern, “They rushed my wife into theatre, and she had a C Section under general anaesthetic. Zachary was born “floppy and unresponsive” and needed oxygen initially but was fine after some support. He had issues with his blood sugars most of his first day but was given the all clear on day 3. He really is a fighter.”

Ed, who described the triathlon as the hardest thing he has ever done, wanted to give something back to the hospital, “I wanted to fundraise for the hospital to give something back as it was a truly unbelievable experience, and it is magical to have everyone home safely.

The team at Burton truly are lifesaving angels. They work with a clarity of thought under pressure I can only ever dream of having. They communicate excellently to the family, and they only have the wellbeing of everyone in their minds.”
