Family raises £5,000 for The Royal Derby Hospital Intensive Care Unit, as thanks for exceptional care
The family and friends of a patient, who sadly passed away on the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at The Royal Derby Hospital, has raised £5,000 for the unit, in his memory.
Matthew Chambers received care on the unit and as thanks for the exceptional care provided, Matthew’s fiancée, Clare Graham and his father, David Chambers, created a GoFundMe page to raise funds for the department. The donation was made to reflect the family’s appreciation for the kindness and compassion shown by the ICU staff, to both patients and their families.
Caroline Swan, Senior Sister on the ICU, shared her thanks for the donation. She said, “We are truly grateful to Matt’s family for thinking of us during such a difficult time. This donation means so much to us all and we will ensure that it directly benefits our patients and their loved ones.”
She added, “As a manager, it is always humbling to hear from patients and their families. Receiving such warm feedback, especially during their time of grief, is incredibly moving and serves as a reminder of how dedicated and special our team is.”

Clare Graham, Matt’s fiancée, expressed her sincere thanksto the ICU team. “Though the outcome was not what we so desperately hoped for, we couldn’t have asked for better care for Matt. The staff at the ICU were truly wonderful and we are forever grateful to them. Matt was such a kind and generous person and we miss him deeply. It brings us some comfort knowing that the funds donated in his memory will help others in need of the expert care that Matt received. We know he would have wanted that too.”
Jill Matthews, Chief Officer of Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity, also expressed her thanks. “We are thankful for this thoughtful donation. It will have a lasting impact on the care we can provide in our ICU and we are so grateful for the support from Matt’s family. It is a beautiful tribute to Matt’s memory.”
