New equipment for Children’s Emergency Department
Young patients at Derby’s Children’s Emergency Department are benefitting from better diagnosis and quicker treatment for sepsis, thanks to new equipment funded by a generous donation.
Tony Chambers, who runs Birmingham-based Strategic Communications Services, donated more than £22,500 to purchase a blood gas analyser to diagnose sepsis and specially-equipped trolley containing everything needed to treat the condition, along with a ventilator and an observation monitor and a camera. It is the first time the department has had its own blood gas analyser, allowing staff to routinely test children showing symptoms of this serious condition. This has led to an increase in diagnoses.
Consultant Paediatrician Dr Gis Robinson, is thrilled to have the equipment in place in the Children’s Emergency Department. Dr Robinson said “The new blood gas analyser and sepsis trolley mean that as Consultants we are able to detect sepsis more easily in our young patients. It’s a life-threatening condition, so early detection means fewer children will become seriously unwell. We are extremely grateful for this fantastic donation.”
Strategic Communications Services chooses a charity annually which they donate to. Mr Chambers chose the Children’s Emergency Hospital after visiting the department.
He said: “The team in CED do such a very important and difficult job, so I’m pleased to be able to help in this way. Hopefully it will benefit the treatment of the children they help. It’s great to see the equipment bought is already making a difference to patients.”
