A fund has been set up in memory of Dr Manjeet Riyat, an accident and emergency consultant who was hugely respected nationally, as a mark of respect after he died after contracting Coronavirus.
Manjeet was the UK’s first Sikh consultant in emergency medicine and had worked in Derby since finishing training in 2003 but passed away due to Covid in April.
His colleague Dr Dan Becker, who is also an emergency medicine consultant in Derby, helped to set up the fund in recognition that Manjeet had been greatly respected by colleagues locally and nationally for his contributions to many aspects of emergency medicine.
Dr Becker said “Manjeet did so much over many years to support and train our doctors and other Emergency Medicine colleagues. He was a Lead Examiner for the Royal College of Emergency Medicine and had worked as College Tutor and as an Educational Supervisor for the Deanery. So many trainees and other colleagues owe Manjeet a debt of gratitude for his personal support, guidance and supervision and for the strong example he set in his own practice. In his memory, we have now set up the Manjeet Riyat Training, Education and Development Fund in recognition of his enormous commitment and contribution.”
The fund has been established specifically to support and promote training, education and development for individuals in the field of emergency medicine in Derby and the East Midlands, with the ultimate purpose of improving the care provided to our patients.
The fund will enable emergency medicine trainees to develop interests, gain skills, and access experiences above and beyond their core training.
In recognition of Manjeet’s contributions and the purpose of the fund, Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity has also agreed a donation of £10,000 to the fund from the COVID-19 appeal.
Dr Becker said “since Manjeet’s death many people have expressed a wish to fundraise and donate in his memory, and the fund is a legacy that now provides the opportunity for them and others to support a cause that was close to Manjeet’s heart.”
