Cancer survivor’s fundraising efforts, for local hospital, reach an incredible £80,000


Local fundraiser, Elaine Dunnicliff, presented a cheque to Urology Consultant, Mr Williams, on Friday 23rd February 2024, after raising thousands of pounds for the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity. 

The presentation, which took place at the Kings Treatment Centre, saw Elaine handover cheques for £10,000 (for Urology) and £6,000 (for the Cardiac Catheter Suite) that she has raised through various fundraising activities. As a regular and valued fundraiser, Elaine’s fundraising has now topped £80,000 in total for the charity.

Elaine Dunnicliff, said surgeons “saved her life” after she was diagnosed with kidney cancer in 2005.

The Melbourne woman, who says “you can’t put a price on life” decided after she had her kidney removed in 2006 that she would give back to the hospital by becoming a fundraiser.

Elaine said, “After undergoing a life changing operation 18 years ago, I decided I wanted to give back to urology after all the amazing care I received from Consultant, Mr Williams and the team. I am so grateful to each and every one of them and this is my way of giving something back. I will continue with my fundraising and am hoping that I can raise an additional £20,000 taking me to £100,000 raised overall.”

Commenting on Elaine’s fundraising achievements, Jill Matthews, Chief Officer at Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity said, “We are truly blown away by Elaine’s dedication and are so grateful for her hard work and commitment to fundraising for our hospitals.  The funds raised previously, and those presented today, make a huge difference to patients and we are truly grateful.  Elaine should be rightly proud of what she has achieved, and we can’t thank her enough.”

Dr Kamal Chitkara, Consultant Cardiologist, also extended his praise for the fundraising, ” We are very grateful to Mrs Dunicliff for such a remarkable achievement. She is an amazing lady who has dedicated her life to raising funds for UHDB. I’d like to say Thank you so much to Elaine for her support. It will make a significant difference to the cardiology department.”
