Charity Helps To Fulfil Birthday Wish
A patient receiving care at Royal Derby Hospital was able to cheer on our lioness team with his daughter thanks to support from Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity.
Kevin Hill, currently under the care of Ward 310, went through a rollercoaster of emotions to get the tickets. Daughter, Faith, decided all she wanted for her birthday was to watch a football match with her father, so Kevin brought tickets to watch the England Women’s Euros semi-final against Sweden.
Tragedy struck however, and after a prolonged stay in hospital after being diagnoses with Calciphylaxis, a rare condition that can cause Necrosis, the dream trip had to be postponed.
After a frantic mission to swap tickets and a direct plea to UEFA, Kevin finally got tickets!,
“We ended up with just a few days to sort everything out but on the Thursday before I just broke down in tears. It wasn’t just a football match; it was so much more. I hadn’t left the hospital in so long and it was meant to be a special time with my daughter so the thought of letting her down hit me hard.”
The turning point was when Kevin finally got approval from his doctors that he could safely go to the match. Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity then arranged transport to get Kevin and Faith to the match safely and in comfort after he needed specially adapted transport for a wheelchair.
“It was a wonderful day, and we have a great time making memories. It was beyond words, truly beautiful. Thank you so much to everyone who make it possible!”
After the excitement of seeing the England Women’s Team at Sheffield, Kevin also managed to watch the exciting final with Faith whilst on the ward and enjoyed the special moment of watching our lionesses roar to victory. “Faith loves football so it was a really exciting and memorable moment that we will never forget.”
