Queen’s Hospital Burton welcomes soaring swans with grant funding from Sciensus
Local life sciences company Sciensus, has contributed a grant, enabling a piece of art to be installed at Queen’s Hospital Burton-upon-Trent. The striking art installation, which will be unveiled today (13 November 2025), has been created by renowned willow artist Emma Parkins and Miles Halpin features five majestic white willow swans captured in a moment of movement and light.
The installation will provide a warm and uplifting welcome to patients, staff and visitors alike. In fact, the idea for the swans came directly from NHS staff, who were invited to choose which animal they would most like to see represented in the space.
Emma Parkins’ signature style brings the ancient craft of willow weaving to life with a unique artistic flair drawn from her background in illustration. Her sculptures are celebrated for their character, charm and emotive presence.

Jill Matthews, Chief Officer at Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity, expressed her thanks to Sciensus for the grant. “We’re incredibly thankful to Sciensus for their generous support. This beautiful artwork will provide a moment of calm and reflection for everyone who enters the hospital. Swans hold a deep connection with Burton, from the iconic swan sculpture at Stapenhill Gardens to the real birds that grace the River Trent. This installation continues that legacy in a setting where it can offer comfort and inspiration.”
The link between Burton and swans dates back decades, with the beloved Stapenhill Gardens swan sculpture—first installed in 1953 to mark Queen Elizabeth II’s coronation—becoming a town landmark. The new willow swans honour that tradition while bringing a fresh, contemporary energy to the hospital environment.
“We’re proud to play a small part in bringing this vision to life for the community,” said Gordon Cox, Chief Operating Officer at Sciensus. “We believe healthcare is both an art and a science that combines empathetic clinical care with digital innovation. These swans reflect that balance beautifully: crafted with precision and artistry, yet full of life and emotion.”
