From lab coats to leap of faith – Lucy and Katie take on the skydive for our charity
Meet the brave duo from the Royal Derby Hospital
Healthcare Science Assistants, Lucy and Katie from the Royal Derby Hospital’s pathology department, are swapping their lab coats for parachutes as they prepare to take part in this year’s charity skydive. They have both always wanted to take part in a skydive and were prompted to take action after spotting an event poster in the hospital.
Why they’re taking the plunge
Their motivation is threefold:
- Raising funds for their department (pathology).
- Spreading awareness about the importance of cervical screening for women. especially to those in their age group.
- Challenging themselves in a whole new way.
Both in their early twenties, Lucy and Katie are passionate about using this platform to encourage more young women to attend their cervical screening appointments once eligible.
“There’s a fear around it and being vulnerable,” says Katie, “But I’ve seen first-hand how a 10-minute appointment can be life-saving.” Lucy continues, “As two young women working in cytology, we believe it’s important to raise awareness of how important it is to go for a routine smear test – having a test is thought to save around 5000 lives every year in the UK. We’re one of 8 cytology laboratories in the country processing between 300,000-330,000 cervical smear tests each year”.
Though they don’t yet qualify for screening themselves (eligibility begins at age 25), both are committed to starting vital conversations early.
Marathon mindset: Lucy’s extra challenge
Lucy is also lacing up for the Rob Burrow Leeds Marathon on 11th May, where she’ll also be raising money for our charity. This is her first marathon and she’s been getting prepared for the big day by following a dedicated training plan. Lucy has big ambitions and tells us she has already entered the ballot for the 2026 London Marathon. We eagerly let her know that our charity has places for the event too, should she wish to apply.
Ready for take-off (almost…)
With the big jump looming, Lucy and Katie say they’re feeling a mix of scared, excited and nervous – but having each other makes all the difference. They’re still playfully debating who will be brave enough to go first! Family and friends will be there on the day to cheer them on.
