Charity’s Arts Team Scoop Prestigious Award for National Project

Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity are proud to announce that their Air Arts team have won an award at annual RSPH awards through being part of ‘Our National Health Stories’ programme.

The award was given to the team at a ceremony held at The Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH) Awards on 28th November.

The project, which was a collection of powerful and moving stories about the NHS, in celebration of its 75th Anniversary, received the award for its outstanding contribution to promoting health and wellbeing.

“Our National Health Stories” saw an unprecedented collaboration between 19 NHS trusts across England and a creative team led by Kwame Kwei-Armah. It built upon, and shone a light on, the incredible and diverse work – often hidden from public view – of UK hospital arts programmes.

Each unique story was told through artwork of all different forms – music, poetry, drawings, paintings, film – developed during a six-month nationwide engagement programme by and with staff.

The RSPH Awards recognise and celebrate a wide range of activities, policies and strategies that empower communities and individuals, improve the population’s health and address the wider social determinants of health.

Laura Waters, Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity Head of Arts, is overjoyed by the win, “We are delighted that the project that we contributed to has been recognised at the Royal Society for Public Health.  Winning this award is a testament to the incredible talent that we have across our NHS.”

Air Arts, which is part of Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity, offers a wide ranging and ambitious programme across five hospitals. The programme offers arts and music to distract from illness, improve wellbeing, aid recovery and enhance the hospital experience.
