Charity bike ride in honour of colleague
A Royal Derby Hospital consultant will be taking on a 24-hour charity bike ride tomorrow (1 April), in honour of a beloved UHDB colleague who sadly passed away over the weekend.
The whole UHDB family have been rocked by the passing of Mr Amged El-Hawrani, Associate Clinical Director and Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) Consultant at Queen’s Hospital Burton, after contracting COVID-19.
Hundreds of people have paid tribute to Mr El-Hawrani over the last couple of days – you can read some of them here.
Dr Mark Johnston, Derby ENT Consultant, has decided to pay his own tribute to Mr El-Hawrani, by completing a 24-hour static bike ride, to raise money for Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity.
Dr Johnston, his wife and two children will take it in turns to do legs of the bike ride from tomorrow morning.
We’re delighted to say that more than £2,000 has been raised for this fantastic cause already – you can show your support by donating here.
Dr Johnston added: “We have lost a colleague, who was well respected and we feel deeply saddened for his family and friends. As medics we are taught to cope with bereavement, but rarely is it a colleague doing the job he loved to help others.”
