Brave Mum and Daughter Plan Skydive to Support Hospital Unit

A courageous mother-daughter duo from Ripley, Derbyshire, are set to skydive from 7,000 feet to raise funds for the Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity. All proceeds will benefit the Royal Derby Hospital’s Combined Day Unit.

Milena Jackson and her mum, Manuela Wilkinson, decided to undertake this fundraising effort as a thank you for the exceptional care received by father and husband, Gary Wilkinson, who passed away in June.

Milena explained, “We chose the Royal Derby Hospital Combined Day Unit because they have supported us through everything. The dedication and outstanding care provided to my dad, Gary, are the main reasons we’re directing the funds to this unit.”

Milena and Family

Gary was diagnosed with skin cancer in 2018. After an operation to remove part of his nose, the family believed he was clear. However, in 2021, cancer was discovered in Gary’s kidney, which was subsequently removed, giving the family a brief sense of relief.

Milena continued, “The cancer then spread to my dad’s lymph nodes in his lungs, then to his spine and liver, and eventually became aggressive in the prostate. Treatment for this type of cancer is challenging, but my dad was incredibly strong and fought every day. He endured multiple hospital visits, powerful medications, and rounds of chemotherapy, yet he still managed to bring joy to everyone around him.

“My mum and I are going to skydive from 7,000 feet because it’s our worst fear, and we want to overcome it for a good cause. My dad faced his worst fears, so we want to do this for him,” Milena added.

Jill Matthews, Chief Officer at the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity, expressed gratitude, saying, “We are incredibly thankful to individuals like Milena, Manuela, and their family, who dedicate their time to fundraise for our charity in appreciation of the care their loved ones received in our hospitals. Every penny raised will go to the Combined Day Unit, which provides specialised care for patients undergoing treatment for cancer or blood disorders. Donations from fundraising activities make a significant difference to patients, and we are truly grateful.”

We would like to thank Milena, Manuela, and their family for sharing their story.
