Avtar’s 365 Charity Mission
A Royal Derby Hospital Porter is walking two laps around Royal Derby Hospital every day for the next year to raise money for colleagues to support them throughout the Covid pandemic.
Avtar Samrai, who previously fundraised for the charity back in April, decided to carry on his journey for and encourage staff to join him on his walks to boost their mental health and fitness levels.
Setting a target of £20,000, he has already raised over £7000 despite only being on day 18 of his 365 day long mission.
He added: “I have decided to carry on fundraising in tribute and support of my colleagues working through these difficult times. l want to support different departments and l was approached by quite a few colleagues saying l had inspired them and they wanted to do something with me.”
Avtar has been joined by different colleagues each day on his walks, and has encouraged staff to get out and have mental health breaks while on the walks, “As we are again going through difficult times, walking around the hospital will bring colleagues out of their departments for a while and get some fresh air. It has been a sad year but for me in some ways it’s been positive, it’s given me a purpose in life.”
