Apprentice team attends prestigious award ceremony with support from hospital charity
Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity has enabled a gifted apprentice to attend a prestigious award thanks to funding.
Waru Modi, an apprentice at The Royal Derby Hospital, was nominated earlier in the year for the award and while he did not win on this occasion, the nominations itself was recognition of his hard work and dedication to his patients.
The award ceremony sought to recognise the talent and diversity within further education, honouring those working hard to overcome adversity and achieve their goals through apprenticeships.
The team’s attendance at the event was made possible with funding from Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity, who are dedicated to supporting inclusion and diversity.
Samantha Munyoro, senior clinical educator for apprentices at UHDB, was proud to see Waru nominated. “Having personally seen Waru’s growth during his apprenticeship, I was humbled to have been part of that process. This is why I love my job – I get to help shape our future workforce to be the best they can be,” said Samantha.
“Over the past 18 months, I have had the privilege of observing Waru and his contributions to promoting multiculturalism and diversity within the ward, despite the challenges of joining a new team and relocating to a new country without prior healthcare experience.

The positive impact of Waru’s work is reflected in the feedback received from patients. Many have expressed their appreciation for his compassionate care and cultural sensitivity.”
Derby & Burton Hospitals Charity would like to congratulate Waru and the team for their incredible achievements.
Jill Matthews, Chief Officer at the Derby and Burton Hospitals Charity, said: “We were thrilled to be able to help fund attendance at this important award ceremony and are proud to be able to support such a fantastic achievement and help champion multiculturalism and diversity across our hospitals.”
