Amanda gains her place at the London Marathon after seven ballot attempts
Amanda Barlow, from Derby, is no stranger to the London Marathon, but this year marks a special milestone. After applying for a ballot place seven times, she has finally secured one and she’s using it to raise money for our charity.
Amanda has previously completed the London Marathon twice with a charity place for Prostate Cancer Research Centre, but this is the first time she’s gained entry through the ballot. She was so inspired by the atmosphere when watching last year’s marathon in person, that she applied for the ballot straight after!

A running journey full of determination
In addition to the London Marathon, Amanda has also conquered the Manchester Marathon. However, the last time she tackled a marathon was back in 2019, when she injured her hip and jokingly said, “If I ever try and run another marathon again, please stop me!”. Fast forward to today, and she’s gearing up for race day once again.
After securing her spot in the ballot, Amanda was under no obligation to fundraise, but was determined to support her local hospital charity. “I could be running for any number of great causes, but I’ve chosen to support my local hospitals, where many of my friends and family have received treatment and care,” she explains. One of those friends is Paula, who is currently undergoing treatment for a rare womb cancer at the Royal Derby’s combined day unit, having previously been treated for breast cancer. “My friends and family mean everything to me,” she shares, and witnessing the support her loved ones received from hospital staff, Amanda decided that supporting the hospital charity would be a truly meaningful cause. “The hospital relies on the charity more than people realise,” she added.
Training strategically
Balancing a demanding job as a finance director, Amanda uses running as a way to get fresh air and switch off from stress. To prepare for the marathon, she has enlisted the help of a running coach who has been guiding her with a structured training plan. Her routine includes a mix of low-intensity runs, long distances, sprints, and hills.
Amanda firmly believes that anyone can run a marathon if they have the right plan.
The final countdown
As race day approaches, Amanda is looking forward to crossing the finish line and soaking up the electric atmosphere. She describes running the London Marathon as “One of the best days of my life” and encourages others to take part if they have the chance.
Her advice? “Do it, it will be the best day of your life.”
Amanda’s company are also fund-matching whatever she raises, doubling the impact of her efforts .
A message to future runners
For those who have applied and haven’t been successful yet, Amanda’s advice is simple: keep trying! After seven attempts, she finally secured her place. Alternatively, she suggests applying for a charity place to guarantee a spot while supporting a great cause.
Her final message? “There’s no better cause than your local hospital—it will benefit someone close to you.”
